Jewelry For My Lady

Jewelry comes in all shapes and sizes. It's been around since the beginning of humans. The symbol of the Celtic Cross combines the cross with a ring surrounding the intersection. The Celtic Cross has ancient origins and variation of the regional “Sun Cross”, (which has arms that does not extend outside the circle). The Celtic Cross was combined with the Christian Cross, when Christianity spread to the British Isles. This is why the Christian High Crosses (which is ornately decorated and are made of stone). Also, these types of crosses are built in this design. The Celtic Cross is pre-Christian origins, similar to the “Sun Cross” which was found in the Bronze Age Europe or (Nordic Bronze Age, Urn field culture). The Celtic Cross may have origins in the earliest Coptic Church. The Celtic Cross is said to be similar between the “Ankh” with a circle on Coptic Stella or combinations of circle and cross were used in early Christian Egypt. It is a popular myth that the Celtic Christian Cross was introduced by either two Saints, Saint Patrick or Saint Declan during his time converting the Irish. In the early 7th century, the Irish monks erected many free-standing , upright crosses (or high-crosses). Some of the “Celtic” crosses had inscriptions in Runes. There are a few surviving “Free-standing” crosses in places like Cornwall, (the famous St. Piran’s Cross at Perranporth) and Wales, on the Island of Iona. Other stone crosses can be found in Scotland and further into England. Also, in what used to be known as the former Northumbria. There are many other crosses found in Ireland. Some famous standing crosses are the Cross of Kells, County Meath, Ireland, the Crosses at Monasterboice, County Loath, Ireland: Ardboe Auld Cross, Ardboe, County Tyrone, Northern, Ireland: and the Cross of the Scriptures, Clonmacnoise, Ireland. In the mid-19th century the Celtic revival led to an increase in the creation and use of Celtic crosses in Ireland. Between 1899 to 1940, the Celtic Cross became popularized for the use in jewelry. Also, during the 19th century, the local government of Guilford, England placed a Celtic Cross on top of Hindhead at the site of a Gibbett, (which a Gibbett is originally synonymous with the gallows, later though used as an upright post projecting arm from which the bodies of criminals were hung in chains or irons after executions), on Gibbett Hill.
