Some famous standing crosses are the Cross of Kells, County Meath, Ireland, the Crosses at Monasterboice, County Loath, Ireland: Ardboe Auld Cross, Ardboe, County Tyrone, Northern, Ireland: and the Cross of the Scriptures, Clonmacnoise, Ireland. In the mid-19th century the Celtic revival led to an increase in the creation and use of Celtic crosses in Ireland. Between 1899 to 1940, the Celtic Cross became popularized for the use in jewelry. Also, during the 19th century, the local government of Guilford, England placed a Celtic Cross on top of Hindhead at the site of a Gibbett, (which a Gibbett is originally synonymous with the gallows, later though used as an upright post projecting arm from which the bodies of criminals were hung in chains or irons after executions), on Gibbett Hill.
