The History of Daggers and Knives

Buy Renaissance Clothing & Complete Your Ren Faire outfit with Authentic Design & Quality

There is somewhat of a difference between daggers and knives, but many people have their own opinions on stabby stuff. Mostly it is the size that makes a difference. Knives are considered smaller and can be fixed or made to fold. Daggers are fixed and decorated similarly to a sword, but smaller. The first knives were made out of stone and bone. They were used for skinning animal hides, peeling tough fruit and vegetable skins, and as utensils. The dagger progressed through history into fighting weapons, sometimes secretly hidden somewhere on the body until within range of the assassin’s target. During the next several centuries, they have been made smaller and smaller. Within the 20th century, the knife was designed to fold so it would not cut a person’s hand if they tried to pull it out of their pocket. Many have a locking mechanism, so the blade does not fold back onto the user’s fingers. The most popular of the ‘switch blades’ is the Swiss Army knife, but it has more than just a blade. It has a can opener, a wine bottle opener, a screw driver (Phillips & flathead), scissors, small saw, and an assortment of different sized blades. Some Swiss Army knives can be as large as a person’s arm, but are only used for advertising and not meant to be carried around in public.

Southwest Blades offers low prices on collectible swords, knives, daggers, axes, ninja swords, katanas, custom made Shinto katanas, claymores, movie weapons and more. Hundreds of different items available. We are also now offering airsoft guns and historically accurate replica guns.
