The History of Candles
Candle making can be traced back to many ancient times all in different ways, all over the world. For the Egyptians, it was beeswax, while the Chinese used whale fat or insects and seeds were wrapped in paper, calling these Tapers. Boiled cinnamon was placed into wax for Indian temples. Oil from a Candlefish or Eulachon was also used for illumination. In Pompeii, Italy, Archaeologists have found candelabras dating years before the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. In Egypt, there have been clay candleholders excavated. Qin Shi Huang’s mausoleum, who was the first emperor of China’s Qin Dynasty, was discovered to have candles twenty - two miles east of Xi’an. In Rome, Tallow was created from suet, animal fat, for making them, but they were terribly smoky. They mostly used them for illumination and prayer. A candle clock used by the Anglo Saxon King Alfred the
Great, managed to make it burn for a little over 4 hours.
The inventions progressed until a 24 hour version was created the same way. In the 1400’s, Tallow candles were made for street lamps. Paris made the first candle mould in the 15th century. Later, bayberries were made into candles by the first American colonists. In the 1700’s, China designed weights into the sides of candles, while the they melted, the weights would fall into a bowl, making a loud noise when it hit. For coal miners in the
early 1900’s, a candle clock similar to the ones mentioned
above was used for years. Lamps in Hindu houses are lit every day in front of the Lord’s alter, depending on the time of day. Clay lamps called “Diyas” are often lit during Hindu festivities. St. Lucia Day, celebrated in Scandinavian
countries, is on the 13 of December, where a crown of them
is placed on a young girl’s head. The Festival of Lights,
or Hanukkah as is it’s common name, has an eight day holiday
period where a special candelabra is lit to signify the
rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem. On the anniversary
of the death of a loved one called Yahrtzeit, a candle is
lit in memoriam. Another day of remembrance is Yom HaShoah
for the people who died in the Holocaust. Before Passover,
a candle is lit for Chametz, or leavened bread, symbolic search -
that is not eaten on the holiday. Kwanzaa, an African American
holiday uses seven of them: three green for hope, three red to
represent struggle and one black candle to represent the African
American people. The candle is for rationality, lighting the
way of reason for Humanists. With Unitarian Universalism churches worships joy and concern with the lighting of
candles. Also, in some Christian interfaith Weddings, the lighting of a “Unity Candle” is a recent tradition used mostly in the United States. The “Unity Candle” consists of three of them: two taper, one on each side of a large pillar
candle (this one could be decorated with a picture of the couple, the wedding announcement or the couple’s favorite poetry, etc.) in the center. The tradition is that a family member from the Bride side and a family member from Groom
side - usually the mother or father, lights one of each of the taper ones, (the side the Bride stands, her family member lights and the side the Groom stands, his family lights). Then, during the ceremony before the Bride and Groom are announced husband and wife, they walk to the candles, each pick - up their family’s lit candle and together they light the center pillar candle, then blowing out the two taper candles. This symbolizes
the two families becoming ONE. Then as the couple returns to the alter, they are announced to the crowd as husband and wife. Wicca and Paganism is mostly known for its use of candles, one for each of the elements: Earth, Air, Water and Fire. Also, to open and close the ritual being used. Candle Magic has been used since the beginning of time, traced back to the Paleolithic
Era. People believe ceremonies using candles are associated with the Occult, black magic or Witchcraft. But, Candle Magic is not dark or negative, unless it is used to cause harm to a person or the ending results are negative, but beware of these negative measures. Any kind of magic, whether positive or negative, comes back to you, Three - Fold. Also, what you ask for may come true: so be careful what your are asking for, in Candle Magic, wording is everything. Be precise, very careful and be sure to cover every thing that needs to be said. Keep
Candle Devotion away from the areas near the Television,
radios or other areas where candles can be disturbed, since Daily Devotion does not need to have any types of disruptions. Also, keep candles away from curtains and anything else that can catch fire easily, you don’t want to burn down the house or alter. Candle holders come in many shapes, sizes and colors, from glass to class to metal. If the candle is too wide, all that needs to be done is a little trim until the candle fits. If it is too small, wrap fireproof object, like aluminum foil, around the candle until it fits snuggly in the holder.
