The History of Axes
Axes, spelled with or without the e, have been revolutionized
to be a cutting and wood splitting tool, a religious artifact,
or a battle weapon. The top is called the head while the
bottom or handle is called the helve. It was made of the toughest hard woods, like oak and maple. In Medieval times, they used them for many thing, from fending off witches and hailstorms to assuring male offspring. Many superstitions circulate around them. There are as many of them as there
are cultures. Related to the them are the hammer, the oldest tool in the world. Over the ages, the hammer has been used in many ways, from building to battle. On this site, there are a variety of great war hammers that are similar to the ones used in history and mythology, such as Thor’s hammer, Mjollnir. There are also Staves that were usually used by the Cavalry for taking out an enemy from above or catapulting someone off a horse. The Sohei, fighting monks of Asia, were famous wielders of the Naginata, going into battle, spinning their weapons around them like wheels.
